Grandfather clocks are a beautiful addition to any home, but they need to be properly cared for in order to keep ticking if they are to last for generations and run smoothly.

  1. Keep the area around the clock free from dust by using a feather duster or microfiber cloth regularly to reduce the amount of dust getting into the mechanism.
  1. Clean off any smudges on the case with a soft cotton cloth dampened with water and mild soap solution. Never use harsh chemicals, wet wipes or spray cleaners directly onto the surface of your Grandfather clock as these can damage the surface of the wood.
  1. It is recommended that you check the weights regularly. Modern weights have hooks that are screwed on at the top and a screw at the bottom. It’s important to check that these screws do not loosen.
  1. It is recommended to keep a clock wound and in use to keep the clock mechanism running well. If you do stop the clock for an extended period of time, we recommend running the clock every so often, even for a short while, so that the mechanism doesn’t seize.
  1. If you move your grandfather clock to clean behind it or to decorate, check that the clock case is level when you put it back. If after it’s moved the clock only runs for a few minutes and then stops, it is likely that the mechanism is ‘out of beat’ and the case needs to be leveled. This is a particular issue with antique grandfather clocks. Most modern clocks have self leveling escapements and only require a full swing of the pendulum to put it back ‘on beat.’
  1. mechanical grandfather clock should be serviced every 4-5 years to keep the mechanism in top condition.
  1. Keep your grandfather clock away from direct sunlight as this can damage its finish and cause discoloration over time.
  1. Avoid placing anything damp near your grandfather clock case such as wet umbrellas, towels or cleaning cloths – these items could cause water stains if they come into contact with the woodwork, resulting in damage to the wood finish!
  1. Finally, keep an eye on humidity levels in your house – too much moisture can cause damage over time.
